<p>The environment which students engage in academic activities need to be reviewed to be up to the standard which students learning would not be jeopardized. Class size determines the number of students in a particular class. This study aims to analyze the influence of class size on student success in learning of English language and the relationship that existed between class size and their students’ academic performance in English Language. This study was an experimental study and harness if students’ achievement in English language correlates with their teachers’ quality. 200 English language students were sampled across schools. The statistical analysis used in the study was the mean, standard deviation and PPMC. The findings established that there was significant influence of class size on student success in learning of English language. The study concluded that the larger the number of students in class, the better the academic success of students in English language. It was however recommended that an average class size as recommended by the National Education scheme/board Commission be adhered to in Nigerian schools.</p>Adenike Aderogba OnojahAmos Ochayi OnojahDoctor Jayeosimi

<p>Senior high school students still make a large number of errors related to grammar when they have writing narrative text. This study aimed to analyze the types of grammatical errors, identifying the sources of errors, and knowing the writing difficulties commonly faced by the tenth grade students of senior high school in their narrative texts. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. There were two kinds of data being used namely quantitative data and qualitative data. There were three different instruments applied such as, the teacher, writing test, and questionnaires. There were only 23 narrative texts collected and analyzed. Based on the error analysis, there were 308 grammatical errors classified into four types, namely ‘omission’, ‘misformation’, ‘addition’, and ‘misordering errors’ in students’ narrative texts. ‘Misformation errors’ are the biggest number of errors there were 131, the most dominant errors are ‘misformation of alternating form errors’. The errors occured because of the students’ interlingual and intralingual transfer. There were cognitive problem that made the students feel difficult in writing narrative texts because of their lack of knowledge of English grammar and vocabularies.</p>Ayu Mirah Prihandani

<p>Students’ reading abilities were below of minimum mastery criteria. This study was conducted to describe and analyze the students’ reading competency at junior high school level. The significance was to design and develop reading modular instructions with explicit reading strategies. This study was designed quantitatively. The students’ reading competency was measured quantitatively using a reading competency test. The test consisted of 25 multiple choice items with four options. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively in two steps, namely: descriptive and inferential analysis. The mean scores of the students’ reading competency based on the reading indicators. The research findings were the mean score of the students’ reading competency in class D was 63.20 and in class H was 36.80. The range score between class D and H was same for descriptive text. However, for recount text, the score in class D was larger than class H. Comparing to class H, the score variability in class D was larger for descriptive text and lower for recount text. The EFL teachers are suggested to use the appropriate reading strategies and materials which can encourage the students for following fun reading activity in the classroom.</p>I Putu Budi Arcana YasaDewa Komang TantraPutu Eka Dambayana Suputra

<p>The phenomenon of using swears words are often found in rural areas in Bali. Even the phenomenon of using swears words are also widely used by children who are inappropriate in the social context of society<em>. </em>This research aimed to analyze the forms, types, and functions of swear words that used by children in Poh Bergong Village. Descriptive qualitative method was used as a design to investigate the study in this research and gain the data from the children. The subjects in this study were the children in Poh Bergong Village who used swear words in their daily life. The subjects had an age range of about 6 until 11 years. The objects of this study were the swear words that were used by children in Poh Bergong Village. The data were collected through observation and interview. Observation was used in the social sciences as a method for collecting data about people, processes, and cultures. Interview was used to collect the information about swear words used and the reason why the children use swear words in communication. In this research, there were five instruments used to collect the data, that were researcher, voice recorder, notebook, observation sheet, and interview guide. Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) in the form of descriptive was used as a means to analyze data obtained by the researcher. The result showed that the swear words used by children in Poh Bergong Village has eighty-three forms of swear words,eleven types of swear words, and six functions of swear words.</p>Komang Nova SaniadaDewa Putu RamendraGede Mahendrayana

<p>Stereotypes are viewed negatively since they indicate negative preconceptions about others. Hence, stereotypes are important to study because people might unknowingly employ stereotypes about others in regular encounters. Stereotypes are also found in many films, one of which is in the film "Freedom writer." The aims of this study are to analyze the categories of stereotypes that existed in the film Freedom Writer and to identify the functions of the stereotypes that are produced in the film. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research. This research is a sociolinguistic approach of stereotypes occurring in the movie entitled <em>Freedom Writers</em>. The data is all utterances in the movie. The data analysis technique is carried out by employing sociolinguistics theory. The results of this study show that there are three categories of stereotypes occur: gender, race, and physical traits. The characters in Freedom Writers represent a diverse range of races, and their frequent interactions enable them to readily observe the different characteristics associated with their respective races. Consequently, due to the film's setting in a multicultural society, various stereotypes regarding race, with a particular emphasis on conflicts related to skin color, are prevalent. <p>Distance learning has been implemented in many schools due to covid-19. But it is still unknown whether teachers integrate creativity in learning still needs to be investigated. Therefore the aims of this study are to analyze how the teachers perceived their own creativity in teaching in the classroom. Then how they implanted in distance learning and analyze there is the discrepancy occurred between how the teachers’ perception toward their creativity and the facts of how the teachers implemented their creativity in the real teaching. Mix method was employed as the design of this study which meant there were primary and supportive data. The qualitative data was dominant than quantitative data. The setting of this study was in senior high school and two English teachers selected as the subject of this study. Self-rated questionnaire and classroom observation sheet were used as the instruments. The result of study showed that the teachers perceived themselves as creative, however, the teachers’ creativity was classified in slightly creative based on the observation. Those data demonstrated that there was the discrepancy between the teachers’ perception toward their creativity in the class. <p>The development of science and technology has caused local traditions to be abandoned by the younger generation, one of which is the Makepung tradition. To preserve this culture, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study regarding the lexsicon elements in this tradition. This study aimed to describe and analyze the lexicon that was used on the Makepung tradition in Kaliakah village, Jembrana Regency. This study was designed in the form of descriptive qualitative study and used eco-linguistic approach. There were two process in collecting the data in this study, namely, observation and interview with the informan. Three informants were chosen based on the standard requirement and criteria determined in this study. The data were analyzing based on the data obtained from the informants and described descriptively. Based on the data analysis that have been conducted in this study, it was found that there were total 54 lexicons that is listed in this study, those lexicons are some terms that is commonly used in the Makepung tradition in Kaliakah village, Jembrana Regency. It was expected that this study can be a reference for the other researchers who have interest in Eco-linguistics study, especially for the makepung tradition of Jembrana regency.</p>Putu Wahyu Edi Darmawan

<p>Generally, every language has a lexicon that is grouped into classified verbs. Each verb can be broken down into some specific subtypes. Particularly in English, verbs are semantically divided into several subtypes. Verbs such as <em>tell, ask, inform, offer</em>, <em>forgive, </em>and others are belonging to the types of verbs of speech or speech acts. This study aims to analyze natural semantic metalanguage analysis of English speech act verb of inform. In collecting data is using observational method. Therefore, the theory of natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) is used to analyze the data taken from the American Corpus (COCA). By way of explication, the particular lexicon is explained thoroughly to reveal the subtle meaning of semantic features without any bias. The research argues that the four subtypes of the speech act verb "inform" demonstrate varying semantic forms and structures. The distinctions in lexicon become evident within their common semantic domain. Moreover, the four associated lexicons with the verb "inform" possess unique semantic traits and serve specific purposes within speech acts.</p>Desak Putu Salshabila Ardiantari

<p>English emerged in the Nigerian context as a result of the need to communicate with many people from different ethnic backgrounds who speak different languages. However, the uniqueness of Nigerian English appears, which is different from standard English. This study aims to analyze the status of Nigerian English by explaining the morphological and syntactic features and how they differ from Standard English. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data will be carefully collected to represent various morphological and syntactical aspects. Data will be collected by conducting text analysis and interview, both written and spoken text in Nigerian English. The data collected will be analysed systematically. The result of this study presents the morphological and syntactical features of Nigerian English and how they differ from Standard English. With a brief commentary on its distinct identity, the paper concludes the justification of the notion that Nigerian English must be regarded as one of the world’s Englishes. </p>Yahia Aseri

<p>Sociolinguistics analysis of “Freedom Writer” movie is an analysis of the variation of language that used in society and cultural. The research objective is to analyze the differences in language styles used by multicultural society as well as to determine their relationship with the level of education and cultural backgrounds. The data source in this research is The Freedom Writers movie by Richard La Gravenese, while the data in this research are spoken dialogue that contains in the level of word pronunciation, vocabulary selection, and language errors. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data analysis will be in the form of observations on each selected utterance, followed by presenting the data and drawing a conclusion. The findings reveal that various groups of individuals employ different languages depending on their social standing. Some reasons contribute to these disparities. Besides from race, education level and social background are important elements in the development of a person's language patterns.</p>Zakia Nurin Keiza
