THE EFFECT OF DAILY JOURNAL TOWARDS STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT IN LEARNING CHEMISTRY AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh jurnal harian terhadap prestasi siswa dalam pembelajaran kimia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu dengan desain non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group. Dalam penelitian ini, siswa kelas sepuluh minat sains (X MS) SMA Negeri 1 Ubud tahun ajaran 2013/2014 dipilih sebagai populasi penelitian. Selanjutnya, dua kelas X MS3 dan X MS2 dipilih secara acak sebagai sampel penelitian yang terdiri dari 44 siswa dalam setiap kelas. Selain itu, dua kelas tersebut kembali dipilih secara acak menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok control secara berurutan. Siswa kelompok eksperimen diminta untuk menulis jurnal harian pada akhir pelajaran sedangkan siswa kelompok kontrol hanya diminta untuk membuat kesimpulan atau diskusi secara lisan tentang pelajaran. Nilai rata-rata prestasi siswa dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis kovariat (ANCOVA) pada nilai signifikan 5%. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan SPSS 16.0 for windows. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara siswa yang menulis jurnal harian dan siswa yang tidak menulis jurnal harian. Nilai rata-rata prestasi siswa adalah 84 dan 74, secara berurutan untuk kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol yang berarti prestasi siswa kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi dari prestasi siswa kelompok kontrol.Kata Kunci : jurnal harian, prestasi siswa, pembelajaran kimia
This research aimed to investigate the effect of daily journal toward students’ achievement in learning chemistry. This research belonged to quasi experiment using non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design. In this research, the tenth grades of science class students (X MS) of SMA Negeri 1 Ubud in academic year 2013/2014 were chosen as the research population. Moreover, two classes of X MS3 and X MS2 were selected randomly as the research sample consisted of 44 students in each class. Furthermore, these two classes were re-randomly selected became experimental and control group, respectively. The students in experimental group was asked to write daily journal at the end of the lesson meanwhile the students in control group was only asked to make conclusion or share their idea orally about the lesson. The mean scores of students’ achievement were analyzed by using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at significant value of 5%. The analysis was done by using SPSS 16.0 for windows. The result showed that there is significant different between students who wrote daily journal and students who did not write daily journal. The mean score of students’ achievement was 84 and 74, respectively for experimental and control group which means the students’ achievement in experimental group was higher than students’ achievement in control group.
